DBS and Citi Complete Weekend Tokenized-Deposit Payment
A live USD transaction between Singapore and the United States settled in minutes on September 5 using tokenized commercial-bank deposits and Swift's Digital Ledger.

DBS and Citi completed a live cross-border USD payment over a weekend, demonstrating an institutional settlement path that operates outside traditional banking hours.
The transaction was executed on September 5 between DBS in Singapore and Citi's New York office. According to DBS, tokenized deposits moved through Swift's Digital Ledger and the payment completed in minutes, compared with an industry norm that can extend to two business days.
The asset distinction matters. Tokenized deposits are digital representations of commercial-bank money; they are not public stablecoins and do not remove the banks from the payment chain. Swift's role is to connect existing banking infrastructure with emerging digital networks.
The test is significant because weekends and time-zone gaps remain practical constraints for cross-border treasury operations. A live payment shows operational capability, but one transaction does not establish broad production scale, universal interoperability or lower end-to-end cost.
DBS is part of the twelve-bank core design group shaping Swift's ledger architecture. The bank has also developed its own tokenized-money services for treasury and liquidity management.
The next evidence is repeat usage: more currencies, counterparties and client transactions, together with disclosure on liquidity, governance, failure handling and regulatory treatment. The larger question is whether tokenization becomes a new settlement layer for bank money or remains a controlled bridge between existing systems.
