Ripple Prepares the XRP Ledger for the Post-Quantum Era
Ripple has published a multi-stage roadmap intended to make the XRP Ledger ready for quantum-resistant cryptography by 2028. The plan is a preparation program—not evidence that today's encryption has already failed or that the migration is complete.

Ripple's roadmap sets out testing, hybrid deployment and recovery work designed to protect the XRP Ledger against a future class of quantum computers capable of threatening widely used public-key cryptography.
The program begins with research, inventory and controlled experimentation. Ripple says it plans to test post-quantum signature schemes, study their effect on transaction size and performance, and build environments where developers and infrastructure providers can evaluate migration paths before network-wide activation.
The intended transition is hybrid rather than abrupt. Existing cryptography and post-quantum methods would operate together during part of the migration, limiting the risk of an untested one-step replacement. Ripple also describes a contingency framework for a potential “Q-Day”—the point at which a credible quantum machine could compromise current signature systems.
Why preparation matters now
Quantum risk remains prospective. There is no verified public evidence that a cryptographically relevant quantum computer can currently break the signatures protecting XRPL, Bitcoin or Ethereum.
The strategic problem is lead time. Networks cannot wait for a proven break before coordinating wallet upgrades, validator support, custody changes, hardware compatibility and recovery procedures. Assets held in exposed public-key structures may become targets if the threat arrives faster than migration.
Blue Rogues interpretation: Ripple is treating post-quantum readiness as infrastructure governance rather than a marketing feature. That is the correct framing. The challenge is not merely selecting an algorithm; it is moving an ecosystem without fragmenting access, creating unsafe fallback paths or excluding dormant holders.
What remains unproven
The 2028 target is a roadmap objective, not a completed security guarantee. Performance costs, implementation details, wallet adoption and validator coordination still need to be tested and verified.
The most important confirmations will be published test results, explicit amendment or activation procedures, independent cryptographic review and evidence that exchanges, custodians and wallets can support the transition.
Until then, the accurate conclusion is measured: XRPL has a public preparation path, but the network has not completed its post-quantum migration.
